In Ukraine the gender roles are more traditional. Men not necessarily are gently to women by opening doors to them. Besides that, women are more feminine and try to be more attractive compared to women of other Western Europe countries though Europe is known for being more liberal in terms of women rights and clothing.

Men respect more women in the courtship by bringing flowers and gifts, paying the bills on dates, and women on the other hand, try to look nice and elegant for them, while men tend to be careless about their looks and appearance.

The women stereotype in Ukraine is the woman being the traditional housewife that is cooking, cleaning and having everything ready for their husbands when they arrive from a working day. Men are more likely to be workaholic or lazy if they don’t work and even alcoholic. It is common to see in parties celebrated in houses that the woman is always in the kitchen preparing food for guests, even on her birthday party. These stereotypes can be seen in older generations or in smaller areas.

Today you can also find many women that do not fit these stereotypes especially in young couples where the jobs are shared mostly the same by the woman and the man. Both cook and clean and also both work. Even with that, Ukraine is a new country compared to most of the ones that are in Europe so Ukraine is a lot of years late. This is one of the reasons why it is more male chauvinist.

Women's rights in Ukraine

More than the 60% of Ukrainian women have higher education but, the amount of them that do not have a job is enormous compared to men that have the same level. The unemployed people in Ukraine are mostly women.

According to the law, women and men have the same rights but in the practice some employers refuse to hire young women because of the possibility they might get pregnant. Companies also refuse to hire women that are older than 35 years old having in mind that 55 years is the age for retirement and 73 years is the life expectancy. The few women that got a job get less money than men for the same job and having fewer opportunities.

  2. I can't believe that we're in the XXI century and women in this country are treat like nothing, unbelievable. I mean they say that women and men have the same rights but in the practise they don't consider that women as men have the same rights. It's unfair just because women got pregnant they don't give them a job. That is so chauviist.

  3. It's incredible how men forget the law, they are false people, they don't do what they say. I hope this will change soon. Hernán Olivares

  4. I think this country is almost civilized about the way they treat women and how she is considered in Ukraine. In one hand, you can see a housewife or a woman who do not fit in this, and instead both genders are able to do housework and help each other, this is a clearly proof that the society is no longer thinking in a housewife, but in an independent woman. In the other hand, you can still find discrimination when women have to find a job, because they may get pregnant or how much they earn in contrast to men. That is so unfair.

  6. There is a little difference between Ukraine and Russia: even though Ukraine woman has her high level of education, it is impossible to find job. In Russia people are valorated for their capacities, not for their gender. At least how I remember it :) Irina

  7. It is totally unfair that women that have the same higher education that men cannot have the same job compared to a men that have the same level because in my opinion woman are more inteligent that men and they can do more things at the time.

  9. I'm glad for the young couples, because it indicates that the men's view can change about women' rights in Ukraine. Although, I keep finding unfair the few oportunities of job that exist for women in this country. Noelia Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ*•.¸●

  10. I liked the part where said that women are more feminine and try to be more attractive. This is a good quality, that not all women around the world have. I would like live there, but for one reason I discard this. Men are chauvinist.

  13. =O It's what I mean about! With a equial work country. Well, the differences of hire and that are in all countries. And I agree with the risk to hire young women. Yes,... hate me... but well thinking in a company is hard. But I disagree to pay a lower salary for the same work.

  16. I hate the chauvinism!! In this country there are things very good like women try to look nice and elegant for men but that happens in many countries, it is something common. I think it is more important that women feel they are part of the country and have the opportunity to participate in cultural things and show their abilities. If women can study and have a career, they have to fight to be part of the labor side of their country and receive a just salary. Carla Azocar.

  17. jajajaj xD It's cool to know that there are women that really like or are accustomed to be like the ukraine women. To be very worry and be a good housewife! that's fun... I think that's a good way to show how much you are interesting in another person, or how much important is. Maybe in some cases is a little exaggerated... but it's good. Oh! and ... I really like the fact that the women are worry about their appearencies...that's good.

  18. I think that the role who plays women in Ukraine is very typical in comparison of women of Indian countries for example who have to deal with a very difficult life style concerning their rights, they don’t have much importance for males and just to mention, in Ukraine women’s are really beautiful in fact I really didn’t have idea that Milla Jovovich was from Ukraine, I always thought she was Russian!

  20. Being Ukraine a country where women are the 45% of its labour force, I am not surprised about this. Europeans have a different way of thinking about women's rights. They are considered in all levels:sociall, political and econmical. Nice news al last!!
